Dental Fistula
The word 'fistula' has been taken from a Latin word meaning a pipe or a flute. As the word goes, Fistula is an intermittent passage created by the body itself to remove debris from an abscess, thereby annihilating the infection at the root. A dental fistula is also called a gum boil because it takes place in the gums. It is also called 'Parulis', the orthodontic name given to the opening which is characterized by a pimple at the point of rupture.
The fistula is a channel created in the oral cavity on its own, to fish out bacteria or plaque. A tooth which has an inflammation, exudes pressure to the teeth close to it. The mouth therefore forms a fistula to chart out the accumulated pus and release the tension at the site. The fistula may also be caused due to a disturbance by an unwanted tissue. Drainage of the pus occurs through a passage created through the bones. Therefore, it is seen that a fistula is beneficial to the body. But, due to its function of carrying pus through the teeth, it causes a severe toothache between the sites of infection and discharge, and because it is a primary component of periapical abscess.
To rid a dental fistula, we should first ascertain the cause behind it. The abscessed tooth should be immediately extracted or a surgery called root canal should be carried out. Take care while using antibiotics, as they only provide temporary relief and do not alleviate the problem completely. Hence, keep in touch with your doctor if the pain subsides and get rid of the problem completely.
